Stonehenge-Gift of Our Ancients
Stonehenge, the famous Neolithic and Bronze Age structures found in the earth, is the icon of the man’s evolution and a symbol of tradition for Britons. The Stonehenge was located in the Salisbury hills nearer to the Amesbury town. The buildings and ruins found in the Stonehenge indicate that they were built around 8000 BC to 2000 BC.
The Stonehenge is a series of concentric stone structures and believed to be ritual place. The henge, arrangement of ditch and bank, involves the advanced engineering and hard work as there was no hard tool to dig out for the ditch. The bluestones are the smaller circle of stones which forms the inner part of the Stonehenge. These bluestones were heavy and are carved from the distant Prescelly hills.
The outer ring of the Stonehenge is formed of giant sarsen stones. The Sarsen stones weigh about 50 tones each and that is almost impossible in those olden days. The Durrington Walls, just situated north of Stonehenge shows the culture of Neolithic culture and heritage. The Heelstone, another tourist attraction, is monolithic sandstone standing erect and stout. Further there were lots of carvings and images inscribed on the sarsen stones reflecting the tradition of the habitants.
