Kilimanjaro-Mecca for Trekkers

June 5th, 2011

Kilimanjaro, the highest free standing mountain, is the highest peak in the whole of Africa. It is actually an inactive volcano with three volcanic erupt peaks of Kibo, Shira and Mawenzi. Though the region is located in the tropical region of Tanzania, the Kilimanjaro Mountain is surrounded by the snow and ice.

The Kilimanjaro is about 6000 meters above the sea level and located in the northern Tanzania near Kenya border. The Mount Kilimanjaro has evolved as the home of mountaineers and trekkers during recent years. The climate is neither too hot nor cold but it is warm and wet. So the best months to trek or climb the Kilimanjaro are January and September. As you go high on the mountain, the temperature may fall even below zero degrees.

The peak is surrounded by the green plains of savannah lands. The green savannahs contain mostly trees like bamboos, juniperus and other tropical trees. There would be alpine desert above 400meters supporting less vegetation like pines and lichens. The Chala Lake, formed from the craters, is an exciting place to visit for its magnificent beauty. The number of hotels and resorts were available in the Moshi town, the nearest town to Kilimanjaro.
